The Cure for Indecision for My Generation

by Everlecia J. Taylor

We have more options than ever before —more food choices, more schools choices, and more career choices. The truth is our abundance of options makes it harder to decide. “Let’s go to decisionmakingMcDonalds. No Chiptole. No P.F Changs.” We can’t even decide on what to eat tonight. Yet society tells us to go out into the world and choose what we want to be while there are a zillion new professions are created every day. When I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a basketball player, and in middle school, I wanted to be a journalist. When I was in high school, I couldn’t decide but I felt forced to choose something.

I wanted to be a journalist because it was something that was right in my face. But then I decided in high school to pursue becoming a pharmacist Continue reading “The Cure for Indecision for My Generation”

The Toxicity Inside

deadly-98846_1280I think no one would argue that as people we have a bent toward the negative. That is, we will believe something negative, do something negative and say something negative faster than we will believe, do or say something positive. The question I’ve been asking myself lately is why? Why do we naturally embrace toxicity? I think the answers rest within you.

You don’t truly love who you are. We each have two eyes, two ears, a nose and a mouth but we are each unique. In a world full of millions of people, no two have the same set of fingerprints, not even twins – unique. You may have likes and talents like another but if you take the time to look closely you will see that there is something different. Unless you love yourself, you’ll never be happy and toxicity will fester in you. How can you learn to love yourself and embrace your uniqueness? Think of the things you do when you love another person – you enjoy the things that person likes, you enjoy being with that person, and you speak well of that person. Do these things for yourself even when no one else does. Continue reading “The Toxicity Inside”

April Showers

When we hear the words “April showers”, we think of pleasant gentle rains that refresh everything and everybody. Sometimes, however, these showers turn into storms full of thunder and lightning. Everyone runs for cover. Life is like that. Sometimes we have situations or inconveniences that just trip us up a little. Oops! But at other times, we have storms – major upheavals and unplanned disruptions that stop us cold in our tracks. There is no cover for us to run to. And in life, we can’t avoid storms.

Just like there is a reason behind nature’s storm, e.g., atmospheric pressures, there is a reason behind our personal storms. Sometimes we have storms because of something we did or didn’t do but, more often than not, we don’t know why we are in the storm. The unexplained storm is the most frustrating because we can’t find the reason for the storm and, no matter what actions we take, the storm doesn’t stop. I’m in an unexplained storm right now so I understand completely how it feels.

When we are in an unexplained storm, it’s easy to get discouraged. It’s easy to spiral down into fear and hopelessness. But your job is to weather the unexplained storm. How do you weather such a storm? Here are three things not to do: Continue reading “April Showers”

The Gift of You

I’m old-school. The Christmas season doesn’t officially begin until after Santa Claus appears at the end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Thanksgiving has passed so the Christmas season is now officially here! You may now put up your Christmas decorations and play Christmas music.

This is the season when we take our focus off ourselves and focus on other people. Our thoughts turn to giving and thinking of others, especially those who are close to us. Feelings of joy fill the air. However, some of us fall into the trap of letting the season turn us into stressed-out, guilt-ridden and debt-accumulating individuals; we lose the feelings of joy. Don’t fall into the trap this year. Continue reading “The Gift of You”

The Fourth Thursday

The fourth Thursday in the month of November is set aside as Thanksgiving Day. It’s a national holiday in the U.S. A time for family and friends to gather together to laugh, catch-up, watch football games and eat foods they’ve been waiting to eat all year to eat (like stuffing!) Gratitude is everywhere.

This year as I wait for my meal, I’m pondering a thought one of my business partners dropped on me – be grateful for the difficulties you go through in life. None of us, including me, like the difficulties of life. They always come at the wrong place and time. They cause untold stress. We loose sleep, get angry, feel fear, get upset, worry, doubt, feel hopeless, cry, envy others and go into hiding. Continue reading “The Fourth Thursday”

Let’s Get It Started In Here!

You get excited when you read motivational quotes and post then on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You cheer when a speaker lays down a nugget of wisdom that makes you jump from your seat. You put your nose down, determined to make the quote and nugget an integral part of your life. It’s there for about a day or two, then you forget about it as life gets in the way and you fall back into your old behaviors.

You’ve heard that a personal growth and development plan must be a part of your everyday life. You know it’s important because it will help new behaviors and habits stick, but you don’t know how to start a plan or where to begin or what to do. You are not alone. Very often, people ask me when they should start a personal development plan or if they are too old to start one.  My answer to both questions is Start Now!

No matter what happened in your past or what you thought yesterday, you can start living a different life with new behaviors and habits today.   After all, the cells of your body don’t stop changing when you reach 18 years of age, so why should the way you think or view life stop evolving at a given point in time?  If you have a desire to improve yourself and your life, embrace it! There are three initial steps you must take to begin your personal growth and development plan: Continue reading “Let’s Get It Started In Here!”
