Walking the Leadership Tightrope

Dan Rockwell's avatarLeadership Freak

I’m so committed to pressing into the future that it’s hard to enjoy the present. You can’t lead if you aren’t dissatisfied. How are you navigating the leadership tightrope between what is and what could be?

Leadership tightropes include:

  1. Passion to improve and discouragement at progress.
  2. Pressing into the future and rejection of the present.
  3. Wanting things to be better and constant dissatisfaction.
  4. Satisfaction with the present and fear of apathy or lethargy.

Successful leaders learn to live
with dissatisfaction in positive ways.

If you can’t be positive in the face of falling short, you’ll discourage your team. Optimism has meaning during improvement, challenge, adversity, and distress.

Being dissatisfied in positive ways:

  1. Compare the present with the past when thinking about progress.
  2. Compare the present with the future when tapping into aspirations.
  3. Use the negative present as a tool to create dissatisfaction. “This can’t continue.”
  4. Focus on the talents and…

Motivation, The Book

An Excerpt from My Upcoming Book…………

I know many of you are wondering what I am doing since you have not seen any new posts from me.  I am still working on my book and have set a deadline of July 1st for a completed first draft.  But at this time, I want to give you, my loyal reader,  a sneak peek at what is to come.  Here is an excerpt from upcoming book on personal development.  Enjoy! (and feel free to leave a comment!)

A JOURNAL A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.”

Exodus 17:14 (NJKV)

God knows our nature.  He knows that as human beings, we are easily distracted and forgetful.  Throughout the Bible, God instructed people to write things down (Exodus 34:27-28, Deuteronomy 6:6-9, Deuteronomy 11:1-21, Deuteronomy 31:19).  He did so because He wanted to make sure consistent information was remembered and passed to later generations.

The act of writing information is a profound action with a profound effect on you.  When you write something, you engage your mind and body, your whole self.  Let me explain. Continue reading “An Excerpt from My Upcoming Book…………”

Hope

On April 29th, I was blessed to attend America’s Night of Hope with Joel and Victoria Osteen in Washington, D.C.  I had been looking forward to this night for months.  Since I’m not a baseball fan, this was my chance to go to Nationals Park, the first certified GREEN ballpark (that’s all I know about baseball!).  This was also my chance to see Joel Osteen, a man of God whose messages in his sermons, podcasts and books touch my heart.  The day was sunny and bright –  not too cold, not too hot.  Although there were thousands of people there, everyone was  friendly and polite. There was a calm in the air – it was God’s presence.   Continue reading “Hope”

And The Book Moves On……

I have not put up a post since February because of books, another author’s and mine. A couple of weeks ago, I finished editing an awesome book by Lanette R. Frazier. (@lanetterfrazier). Ms. Frazier is a dynamic woman who enjoys helping other people to reach phenomenal goals in their life. Her book, Standing Victoriously Over Your Storm, is about overcoming life’s challenges. Her testimonies, as well as the testimonies of other overcomers, will take your breath away and give you the strength to overcome also. Get your copy at www.lanetterfrazier.com.

As for my book, I have outlined the chapters, written the introduction and half of the chapters. (there are fourteen). Last week, I took my first step toward publishing. I released what I had written.  Those pages, neatly doubled-spaced and on blue and white paper, are now in the hands of my editor!

I can’t wait to get her input. In the meantime, I write.

Encouragement, Getting Better, Motivation

Express Yourself!!

I like to encourage people to invest in themselves via personal development. Personal development is very near and dear to me.  I have immersed myself into the subject for over 12 years and have witnessed my personal growth. That’s why I devoted this blog to the subject.  While there are many keys, or elements, to personal development, there is one key most people overlook or don’t know about.  That key is to regularly do something you like.

One of the things I love doing is sewing.   Mrs. Spriggs, my neighbor when I was a little girl, knew how to sew and I would spend hours with her while she cut, pinned and sewed fabric with her magic machine into dresses.  I was enthralled.  A few years ago, I had the opportunity to take a beginner’s sewing class and my love for sewing has grown.  Continue reading “Express Yourself!!”

Blog: The Book

Years ago, I wanted to write a book that inspired and encouraged women.  I didn’t know what I wanted to say or how to say it.  So other than having the idea, I did nothing.

When I started this blog in 2010, I had in the back of my mind that I could use the blog to record stuff now that I would put into a book later.  I could also use the blog to dip my toe in the water to see if what I wrote about really helped others.   Well, I got solid feedback telling me people were being helped.  So I wrote and wrote, and kept getting great feedback but I still didn’t see a book.  I didn’t see any commonality in my posts to make a book.

Now life is funny.  Last year, I helped two friends, now authors, produce their first books.  I edited their books.   It was exciting being part of the creative and book publishing processes.   And my desire to write a book rose again.  It really kicked off in November.  I toyed with a concept for a book, but finally settled on another in December.  And began writing!  So far, I have: Continue reading “Blog: The Book”
